Neurogenesis means the birth of new neurons. It is the process by which neurons are created from neural stem and progenitor cells.
DCX is a commonly used marker of plasticity that usually identifies new neurons. In this image we see tissue stained for DCX and another neurogenesis marker, NeuN.

Snyder’s research focuses on neurogenesis in the hippocampus, highlighting the role of these new neurons in such fundamental behaviors as memory formation and learning.
